Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Hungary’s ambassador in response to new European Union sanctions imposed on Tehran over alleged Iranian transfers of ballistic missiles to Russia, Reuters reports.
The EU sanctions targeted seven individuals, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and directors of Iranian aircraft and aerospace industries, and seven organizations, including Iran Air, with measures such as asset freezes and travel bans. Britain, which is no longer part of the EU, also imposed additional sanctions, designating nine new entities and individuals.
Iran denied the accusations of missile transfers to Russia, with Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei claiming that these allegations lack evidence and violate international law. Hungary, holding the EU’s rotating presidency, was called in to address Iran’s strong objections to the sanctions.
Additionally, Iran Air announced it would halt flights to Europe due to its inability to secure necessary flight permits, as it is the only Iranian airline still operating in that region.
