TikTok is laying off hundreds of employees from its global workforce, with significant cuts in Malaysia, as the company shifts towards greater use of AI for content moderation, Reuters reports.
Early reports indicated over 700 job cuts in Malaysia, but TikTok later clarified that less than 500 employees, primarily in content moderation roles, were affected and notified of their dismissal via email. The layoffs are part of a broader strategy to enhance content moderation efficiency, with TikTok stating that 80% of guideline-violating content is now removed through automated systems.
These layoffs come amid increasing regulatory pressure in Malaysia, where the government has mandated social media operators to apply for operating licenses by January due to a rise in harmful online content.
