U.S. President Donald Trump has once again extended the deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations by 75 days. The new deadline, pushed to mid-June, marks the second extension of the original January deadline, which required ByteDance to sell its U.S. assets or face a national security-related ban.
The decision to extend the deadline comes after Trump announced a 34% hike in tariffs on Chinese goods, raising the total tariff rate to 54%. This move prompted China to back away from the TikTok deal, with Chinese officials signaling that the agreement could not proceed without resolving trade issues.
Several U.S. companies, including Oracle and AppLovin, have shown interest in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations, but the deal cannot move forward without Chinese government approval. Trump has expressed confidence that a deal can be reached, but the ongoing tariff dispute complicates the process.
