UK’s Starmer Visits Brussels for First Talks on EU Reset

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his commitment to improve relations with the European Union (EU) following discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Reuters reports.

Starmer does not plan to renegotiate the Brexit deal but aims to make adjustments in areas such as security and trade. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, especially regarding issues like the movement of goods and people, but emphasized a constructive approach to future negotiations. The two leaders agreed to hold regular EU-UK summits, with the first scheduled for early 2025.

Starmer has ruled out returning to the EU’s single market or customs union, he seeks improvements like reducing border checks and enhancing professional qualifications’ recognition. Both sides acknowledged tough negotiations ahead, particularly on youth mobility, a key EU demand.
