Ukraine has launched an investigation into the alleged shooting of 16 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian troops, marking it as the largest reported case of POW executions on the eastern front line, Reuters reports.
The investigation was prompted by a video shared on social media, which purportedly shows a group of Ukrainian soldiers being shot after surrendering, but the exact location and timing of the video have not been independently verified. The incident reportedly occurred at the Pokrovsk front, where Russian assaults have intensified. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin stated that this incident reflects a broader policy of the Russian military and leadership.
Moscow has not responded to the allegations, maintaining that it does not commit war crimes in Ukraine. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Ukraine claims to have documented over 130,000 war crimes committed by Russian forces.
