Russian Forces Advance into the Centre of Ukraine’s Vuhledar

Russian troops have reportedly advanced into the center of Vuhledar, a strategically important town in eastern Ukraine that has resisted Russian attacks since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Reuters reports.

Vuhledar, located on high ground at the junction of two major front lines, makes it strategically important and has been crucial in disrupting the Russian advance in the Donetsk region. Russian forces have made significant advancements in recent days, at a high cost in casualties. Control over the town would enable Russia to further its offensive, providing advantageous positions for artillery fire.

Ukrainian regional governor Vadym Filashkin described the situation as “very difficult,” noting that the enemy is nearly in the city center. Filashkin urged civilians to evacuate, stating that only about 107 residents remained in Vuhledar, down from a pre-war population of 14,000.

The Donetsk region is one of four provinces that Russia claims to have annexed in 2022, and capturing it remains a primary objective for Moscow.
