Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing that the ongoing war with Russia cannot be resolved through negotiations alone and that Moscow must be compelled to seek peace, Reuters reports.
Zelensky criticized suggestions that Ukraine should concede territory to end the conflict, asserting that actions, not talks, are necessary to address the situation. He labeled Russia as the sole aggressor, stating that it has violated international norms and must be forced into peace, calling out North Korea and Iran for supplying arms to Russia, and labeling them as “de facto accomplices.”
Zelensky warned of an uncertain future for Ukraine, particularly with the upcoming US presidential elections, which could shift Washington’s police on military support. He mentioned that, as of now, Russia controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory and is making advances in the east. He hinted at a second Ukraine-led peace summit later this year.
The meeting was contentious, with Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia criticizing the council for hosting Zelensky, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accusing China of providing support to Russia’s military efforts. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi dismissed the allegations, stating that blaming China for the conflict is irresponsible and counterproductive.
