Pop star Miley Cyrus is facing a copyright lawsuit filed in California federal court by Tempo Music Investments, claiming her hit song “Flowers” copies elements of Bruno Mars’ 2013 hit “When I Was Your Man,” Reuters reports.
Tempo, which purchased rights to the song from co-writer Philip Lawrence in 2020, claims that “Flowers” mimics several “melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements” from Mars’ song. The lawsuit also names streaming services and retailers of copyright infringement for distributing Cyrus’ song. Tempo seeks monetary damages and a court order to stop the distribution of “Flowers.” Neither Cyrus’ label Sony Music nor Mars’ label Atlantic Records have commented on the lawsuit.
Cyrus released “Flowers” as part of her 2023 album “Endless Summer Vacation,” and the track has achieved significant success, including over 1 billion streams on Spotify and a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2024.
