NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in an interview with German weekly newspaper FAS, admitted that NATO could have done more to arm Ukraine prior to Russia’s 2022 invasion, potentially preventing the war, Reuters reports.
Stoltenberg acknowledged that NATO hesitated to provide weapons to Kyiv before the conflict out of concern it might escalate tensions with Russia. After the invasion, Ukraine received substantial military support from its allies.
Stoltenberg, who will step down in October after leading NATO since 2014, emphasized that the war will ultimately end through negotiations with Russia, but only when Ukraine is in a position of strength. He did not confirm his next role but mentioned having multiple options.
