A Russian missile strike on a military institute in Poltava, Ukraine, resulted in at least 47 deaths and 206 injuries, marking the deadliest single attack of the year, Reuters reports.
The attack, which involved two ballistic missiles, hit the Military Institute of Communications and a hospital, causing extensive damage and leaving many trapped under rubble. Ukrainian officials reported that rescue efforts are ongoing, with 25 people rescued so far. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and called for a full investigation, vowing that those responsible will be held accountable.
The attack is part of a broader escalation in Russia’s missile and drone strikes against Ukraine. Ukraine has responded with its own drone attacks on Russian targets. The attack in Poltava has prompted three days of mourning, with many residents donating blood for the injured.
