Typhoon Shanshan struck southwest Japan with powerful winds and heavy rain, causing widespread disruptions and leading to the evacuation of over 5 million people, Reuters reports.
The storm, one of the strongest to hit the region, resulted in at least three deaths and numerous injuries. The typhoon knocked out power to over 200,000 households, forced the closure of major factories, including those of Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. The storm, which had wind gusts strong enough to topple trucks, also caused significant disruptions to transportation, including the cancellation of nearly 800 flights and the suspension of train services.
Authorities issued evacuation orders to more than 5.2 million people, primarily in Kyushu and central Japan, where heavy rains have already triggered landslides. Typhoon Shanshan follows closely after Typhoon Ampil, which also caused significant damage earlier in the month.
