Russia’s Governor of Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that the situation on the border with Ukraine remains “difficult but under control” following reports of a Ukrainian attack, Reuters reports.
Belgorod and other border regions have been on high alert after Ukraine launched a major offensive in the neighboring Kursk region three weeks ago, capturing Russian territory. Gladkov reported that Ukrainian forces attempted to break through the Belgorod border, targeting checkpoints at Nekhoteyevka and Shebekino, which Russian forces repelled. However, a prominent Russian military blog indicated that there were no significant attempts to breach the border, with only minor clashes involving Ukrainian reconnaissance groups.
The situation remains tense and the region has been preparing for further attacks, with local authorities making arrangements to resettle residents from villages near the border and compensating them. Shelling and drone attacks were also reported in three local settlements overnight.
