Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to mediating peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, during a visit to Baku, Al Jazeera reports.
This visit was Putin’s first to Azerbaijan since the start of the Ukraine war and the recent Azerbaijani military offensive that retook the Nagorno-Karabakh region from Armenian separatists. Putin acknowledged Russia’s current challenges but expressed a desire to help broker a peace agreement between the two nations, emphasizing Russia’s historical role in the South Caucasus. However, the conflict has strained Armenia’s relationship with Russia, leading Yerevan to seek stronger ties with Western countries.
Putin also discussed joint initiatives with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, including energy projects to transport oil from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean.
