Russia evacuated parts of the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine after Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack, penetrating the Russian border and advancing into the Kursk region, Reuters reports.
Russia stabilized the front in Kursk, though Ukraine managed to carve out a small area of Russian territory, with ongoing battles. The neighboring region of Belgorod initiated evacuations in the Krasnaya Yaruga District due to “enemy activity.” Russia imposed a strict security regime in Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod regions, while Belarus increased its troop numbers at the border, alleging Ukrainian drone airspace violations.
Ukraine’s offensive aims to gain leverage for potential ceasefire talks after the US election. President Zelensky acknowledged the incursions, stating they were to “restore justice” and pressure Russian forces. Russia, claiming to repel Ukrainian attacks, reported destroying numerous drones and heavy weaponry. The US says it was not informed beforehand of Ukraine’s operation, while Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned of a tough response.
Meanwhile, a major fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine, controlled by Russian forces. The International Atomic Energy Agency chief warned the attacks risked nuclear safety. Russia blamed Ukraine for the fire, while Zelensky accused Russia.
