The Ukrainian military reported hitting a Russian military airfield in the Lipetsk region of western Russia, causing significant damage to stockpiles of guided bombs and triggering a series of detonations, Reuters reports.
The attack, carried out by drones, targeted an airfield that stationed Russian Su-34, Su-35, and MiG-31 warplanes. The strike, which aims to reduce Russia’s capability to use warplanes against Ukraine, resulted in a large fire and multiple explosions. Ukraine claimed most aircraft couldn’t take off during the attack. Lipetsk Regional Governor Igor Artamonov confirmed the drone attack, which caused explosions, disrupted power supply, and injured nine people.
This follows a recent Ukrainian strike on an ammunition depot at the Morozovsk airfield. Ukraine’s efforts to hit deep inside Russian territory are limited by a lack of long-range missiles, prompting appeals for Western-supplied weapons.
