Shamima Begum, a British-born woman who joined ISIS in Syria as a schoolgirl, has been denied permission to appeal the removal of her British citizenship by the UK Supreme Court, Reuters reports.
Begum left London in 2015 at age 15, married an ISIS fighter, and had three children who all died in infancy. The UK government revoked her citizenship on national security grounds in 2019 after she was found in a Syrian detention camp.
Begum, now 24, argued the decision was unlawful and that British officials failed to consider if she was a trafficking victim. This argument was rejected by a tribunal in February 2023 and the Court of Appeal earlier this year. The Supreme Court ruled that her case did not present an arguable point of law.
