Australia has raised its terror threat level from “possible,” indicating a more than 50% chance of an onshore attack within the next 12 months due to an increase in extremist views, Reuters reports.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, acting on security advice, stated there is no imminent threat but emphasized the need for vigilance due to the diverse range of extreme ideologies being embraced by Australians. The decision follows recent violent incidents and heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly the Israel-Hamas conflict. Recent violent attacks, including an April knife assault on an Assyrian church bishop in Sydney, have been linked to extremism.
