At least 37 civilians were killed and 212 injured in an explosion at a popular beach restaurant in Mogadishu, Somalia. The Somali government blamed the attack on the militant Islamist group al Shabaab, Reuters reports.
The attackers included one suicide bomber, three who were killed by security forces, and one who was captured alive. Among the injured, 11 were in critical condition and one soldier was also killed during the assault. This incident is the deadliest in Somalia since twin car bombs killed at least 100 people in October 2022.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with security agencies to plan enhanced security measures for the city. The government emphasized its commitment to eliminating al Shabaab, urging civilians to report any militants. Although al Shabaab has not claimed responsibility, the group has carried out similar attacks in the past.
