American YouTuber MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, has faced a mixed response to his latest video in which he claims to have built 100 wells across Africa, CNN reports.
The wells aim to provide clean drinking water for up to 500,000 people in Cameroon, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Donaldson’s 10-minute video also showed him donating supplies to Kenyan schools, building a bridge in a village, and donating bikes to a village in Zimbabwe.
Some Kenyan activists and journalists praised the effort but also highlighted the failures of the Kenyan government, drawing attention to the country’s reliance on philanthropy for such projects. Some expressed frustration that a YouTuber had to step in to address issues that taxes should have covered.
Despite the criticism, MrBeast’s video raised more than $300,000 through a fundraiser supporting local water aid organizations.
