Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned Western plans to use interest from frozen Russian assets abroad to provide loans to Ukraine, labeling it as theft that would not go unpunished, Reuters reports.
Speaking at a meeting with Foreign Ministry officials, Putin criticized the West’s unfair treatment of Moscow, warning that such actions sets a dangerous precedent where any country could potentially face similar asset freezes. He emphasized that despite diplomatic maneuvers, theft remains theft and suggested that the actions could jeopardize the perceived safety of assets and reserves held abroad.
Putin’s remarks came shortly after the Group of Seven (G7) leaders outlined a plan to offer Ukraine $50 billion in loans funded by interest from Russian assets that have been frozen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
