Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has announced that it will formally permit users to share consensual adult content, provided it is clearly labeled as such, Associated Press reports.
This policy, previously informally tolerated, has now been made official. X emphasizes that such content must be consensually produced and distributed, considering it a legitimate form of artistic expression. Users are asked to label their adult content and adjust their media settings to include content warnings for images and videos. However, X restricts adult content for children and users who opt out of seeing it, and prohibits material promoting exploitation, nonconsent, or harm to minors. This policy applies to both real and AI-generated content.
This move sets X apart from other social media platforms like Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, which generally have stricter guidelines on adult content. X aims to differentiate itself by being more provocative and less constrained by notions of brand safety. By embracing adult content, X seeks to attract creators and artists marginalized by other platforms with more restrictive nudity and sexual expression policies.
