Melinda French Gates, former wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has announced her decision to step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which she co-founded with Bill Gates over two decades ago, Associated Press reports.
She praised the foundation’s accomplishments but stated that it’s time for her to move on to the next chapter of her philanthropic journey. Bill expressed gratitude for Melinda’s contributions to the foundation, acknowledging her departure while expressing confidence in her future philanthropic endeavors. Melinda will receive $12.5 billion as part of her agreement with Gates and her future work will concentrate on women and families. The organization will undergo a name change to the Gates Foundation following Melinda’s departure.
The Gates Foundation is renowned for its funding of global health initiatives, including organizations such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization, and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Additionally, the foundation has made significant contributions to research on child malnutrition, maternal health, polio eradication, malaria prevention, and climate change adaptation for small farmers.
