Ukraine’s state security service claims to have foiled a Russian plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky along with other high-ranking military and political figures, Associated Press reports.
Two Ukrainian colonels from the State Guard have been detained for their involvement in the plan, which was orchestrated by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). The plot aimed to carry out an attack before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fifth-term inauguration. The arrested Ukrainian colonels where reportedly recruited before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and now face charges of treason, which carries a potential life sentence.
Zelensky had previously revealed at least 10 previous assassination attempts on his life, with recent developments in Poland implicating a Polish individual allegedly tied to Russian military intelligence in another assassination plot.
