Argentina has introduced a new banknote, the 10,000 peso bill, in response to soaring inflation rates nearing 300%, Reuters reports.
The new bill, worth around $10, is five times the size of the previous largest denomination. The current 2,000 peso bill is worth just over $2, making the new 10,000 peso bill a more practical option. The central bank hopes the new note will address issues like carrying large amounts of cash, high demand for the number of bills, and limited vault space in banks. The new note features independence icons Manuel Belgrano and Maria Remedios del Valle, the bill aims to simplify transactions and reduce costs.
Argentina’s inflation and depreciating currency have devalued the peso, leading people to carry stacks of cash for everyday expenses. President Javier Milei’s austerity measures aim to stabilize the country’s economy after years of instability. Despite high inflation, monthly price rises have slowed, allowing the central bank to cut interest rates.
