Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf has resigned ahead of a no-confidence vote in the Scottish Parliament following the collapse of negotiations to form a coalition with the Green Party, Associated Press reports.
Yousaf’s resignation came shortly after his decided to abandon a key climate change target, which led to the collapse of a potential coalition with the Green Party and a failed attempt to strike a deal with a breakaway nationalist party. Yousaf’s decision to step down follows a period of political turbulence for the Scottish National Party (SNP), which has been weakened by a campaign finance scandal and internal divisions over issues such as transgender rights. The SNP currently has 63 of the 128 voting lawmakers, one vote short of majority.
Both the Conservatives and Labour Party have proposed separate no-confidence motions to weaken the SNP ahead of a UK-wide parliamentary election later this year. Yousaf stated that repairing political relationships requires new leadership.
