A 12-year-old boy, who shot and killed a fellow sixth-grader and injured two others at a school near Helsinki in Finland, told the police that bullying was the motive for the attack, Reuters reports.
The attacker brought a relative’s revolver to the Viertola school and targeted the victims, including the deceased child, and threatened others. The injured students, including a girl from Kosovo, sustained life-threatening injuries. Finland declared a day of mourning for the victims. Police confirmed that the boy had been a victim of bullying but did not provide further details.
The revolver used in the attack belonged to a relative of the suspect, an investigation into how he obtained the weapon is ongoing. Finland tightened gun legislation after previous school shootings, but hunting and target shooting remain popular in the country.
