The Czech government has imposed sanctions on two individuals, including pro-Russian Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, and the news website voiceofeurope.com, for leading a pro-Russian influence campaign in Europe, Reuters reports.
Medvedchuk, who was transferred to Russia in 2022, covertly financed Voice of Europe’s operations, including financial support for European politicians, with the aim of undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Artem Marchevskyi, a Ukrainian and Israeli citizen, was also sanctioned for leading Voice of Europe under Medvedchuk’s instructions, spreading anti-Ukrainian propaganda and disinformation.
The sanctions, aimed at protecting Czechia’s security and democratic processes, were based on information from the Czech secret service agency BIS, which uncovered the Russian-financed influence network. The sanctions involve freezing the financial accounts of the sanctioned individuals.
