Russia Says 60 Dead, 145 Injured in Concert Hall Attack, Islamic State Claims Responsibility

Gunmen carried out a deadly attack at a large concert hall in Moscow, killing over 60 people and injuring more than 145, Associated Press reports.

The attackers stormed the Crocus City Hall, a large music venue in Moscow, where they opened fire on the crowd and set the venue ablaze before they fled the scene. The assault, considered one of the deadliest in Russia in years, occurred shortly after President Vladimir Putin secured another term in a landslide election.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the assault and Russian officials are investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. Speculation arose regarding potential Ukrainian involvement, but Ukrainian officials denied any connection to the incident.

The attack follows warnings by Western embassies about potential extremist threats in Moscow, but were dismissed as attempts to destabilize Russia.
