Uber to Pay $178 Million to Settle Lawsuit with Australian Taxi Drivers

Uber has agreed to pay 272 million Australian dollars ($178 million) to settle a dispute with Australian taxi and hire car drivers over financial losses incurred when Uber entered the Australian market in 2012, Associated Press reports.

The settlement resolves a class action lawsuit brought by 8,000 drivers, stating that Uber’s aggressive market entry caused financial harm to drivers and car owners, with Uber consistently avoiding compensation until now.

Uber described the complaints as “legacy issues” and emphasized the positive impact ridesharing has had on Australia’s transport industry. The settlement, the fifth-largest in Australia’s history, marks the resolution of a five-year legal battle.
