Taliban forces fired heavy weapons at Pakistani troops along the border in retaliation after accusing Pakistan of conducting airstrikes on its territory, resulting in the deaths of five women and three children, Reuters reports.
Both countries have traded blame over recent militant attacks in Pakistan, with Pakistan alleging the attacks originated from Afghan soil, a claim denied by the Taliban. The Taliban condemned the attacks and stated that they do not allow anyone to compromise security using Afghan territory.
The Taliban’s defense ministry stated they targeted Pakistani troops in response to the airstrikes. Pakistan’s military accused Afghanistan of supporting terrorism but did not confirm the reported airstrikes. Afghan Taliban denies the allegations and urged Pakistan not to blame Afghanistan for its own internal problems.
