Russia Behind Systematic Torture of Ukrainian POWs, UN Commission Says

A United Nations commission of inquiry on Ukraine has reported further evidence of systematic torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russia, including threats of rape threats and the use of electric shocks on genitals, Reuters reports.

The commission described these actions as “widespread and systematic,” potentially constituting crimes against humanity. Victims endured brutal treatment with disregard for human dignity during prolonged detention. The report also details extreme cases of mistreatment, including starvation and severe physical abuse resulting in long-term health issues.

The report has been submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, which will decide whether to renew the commission’s mandate. Ukraine urges further investigation and accountability, with support from Germany and other nations. Russia denies the allegations.
