Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated the country’s readiness to use nuclear weapons if its sovereignty or independence is threatened, ahead of an upcoming election where he is expected to secure another term, Associated Press reports.
Putin’s comments, made in an interview with Russian state television, emphasized that while he has not considered using battlefield nuclear weapons in Ukraine, Russia remains prepared to protect its sovereignty using all means necessary, including nuclear weapons. He highlights that Russia’s security doctrine has not changed and permits the use of nuclear weapons in case of a threat to its existence.
Putin’s remarks serve as a warning to the West, stressing Russia’s determination to protect its interests. Putin warned that nations without red lines regarding Russia should expect the same treatment from Moscow. He also discussed recent drone attacks by Ukraine on Russian territory, attributing them to efforts to disrupt Russia’s presidential election.
