‘Rust’ Armorer Convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter in Fatal Shooting by Alec Baldwin

A jury convicted movie weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed of involuntary manslaughter for her role in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” by actor Alec Baldwin during a rehearsal, Associated Press reports.

Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of bringing live ammunition onto the set, leading to the accidental shooting. While acquitted of tampering with evidence, she faces up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. Baldwin, the actor who fired the gun, is facing involuntary manslaughter charges in a separate trial.

Prosecutors argued that Gutierrez-Reed’s negligence in handling firearms and failure to follow safety protocols led to the tragedy. Defense attorneys argued that Gutierrez-Reed was not solely responsible and pointed to broader safety issues on the set.
