Russian forces have claimed complete control of the city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, a city that had been fiercely contested for months, as the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches, Associated Press reports.
Ukraine’s military chief had earlier announced the withdrawal of troops from Avdiivka, citing the need to prevent encirclement and save soldiers’ lives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of an “artificial deficit” of arms for Ukraine, expressing concern that it could give Russia breathing space in the war.
US President Joe Biden expressed confidence in Congress approving additional funding for Ukraine but acknowledged uncertainty about the timing. The withdrawal was criticized as a consequence of congressional inaction by the White House National Security Council.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his troops on the capture, calling it an “important victory.” The capture of Avdiivka may be a symbolic victory for Russia, but it is unlikely to bring significant changes to the front line in eastern Ukraine.
