Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced that it will no longer allow its music on TikTok after the expiration of the licensing deal between the two parties, Associated Press reports.
UMG, which represents artists like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, stated that it had not agreed to terms for a new deal with TikTok and plans to stop licensing content from its artists on the platform. UMG raised concerns about appropriate compensation for artists, the impact of AI on human artists, and online safety for TikTok users.
UMG accused TikTok of proposing low payment rates and attempting to dilute the royalty pool for human artists by promoting AI-created music. TikTok countered, claiming it has reached ‘artist-first’ agreements with other labels and accused UMG of prioritizing its own interests over artists and songwriters.
