Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to 14 years in prison, marking his second conviction in as many days, Associated Press reports.
The charges relate to retaining and selling state gifts in violation of government rules during Khan’s time in power. Along with the prison term, Khan has been disqualified from holding public office for 10 years. The rapid succession of convictions is seen as unusual, raising concerns about the influence of the military in civilian politics.
Khan, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote in 2022, remains popular despite facing over 150 legal cases. However, analysts believe Khan’s party will struggle in the upcoming elections, as many of its candidates have been disqualified, and authorities have cracked down on his supporters.
