North Korea fired over 200 artillery rounds near its disputed maritime border with South Korea, prompting the South to conduct its own live-fire drills, Reuters reports.
North Korea justified its actions as a “natural response” to the South Korean military’s activities and warned of a strong response if provocations continued. South Korean islands’ residents were evacuated to bomb shelters, the firing did not cause any civilian or military damage.
The disputed waters have a history of clashes between the two Koreas, including the deadly sinking of a South Korean corvette in 2010. China has called for restraint and dialogue between the two nations.
