Russia and Ukraine Exchange Prisoners of War with UAE Mediation

Ukraine and Russia have conducted their first prisoner exchange in nearly five months, with more than 200 individuals released by each side, facilitated by mediation from the United Arab Emirates, Reuters reports.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported the release of 248 military personnel by Ukraine, while Kyiv confirmed the return of 230 people, including 224 soldiers and six civilians, marking the largest troop exchange so far.

Despite the ongoing conflict and lack of dialogue on a resolution, both countries have engaged in numerous prisoner exchanges since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, although the frequency has declined in 2023.
