Italy Court Sentences Pakistani Parents to Life in Prison in ‘Honour Killing’ Case

An Italian court has sentenced the father of 18-year-old Saman Abbas to life imprisonment for her murder after she refused to participate in an arranged marriage in Pakistan, Reuters reports.

Saman Abbas went missing in April 2021, and her remains were discovered near her family home in November 2022. Prosecutors alleged that Abbas was killed when she returned to the family home to collect some documents and her family was angered after finding out she had a boyfriend in Italy.

The father, who denied the charges, was extradited from Pakistan to Italy for the trial. The victim’s mother, also involved in the crime, remains at large. The girl’s uncle received a 14-year sentence, while two cousins were acquitted.
