“Friends” star Matthew Perry died from the “acute effects” of ketamine, a powerful sedative, according to an autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Reuters reports.
Perry drowned in his hot tub after losing consciousness due to a combination of factors, including high levels of ketamine, coronary artery disease, and the opioid-addiction medicine buprenorphine.
The autopsy ruled his death an accident, and trace amounts of ketamine were found in his stomach, suggesting possible self-medication. There were no traces of alcohol, illicit drugs, or drug paraphernalia at the scene.
Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety, with his last treatment occurring a week and a half before his death. Despite struggles with addiction in the past, Perry had been sober for 19 months before his passing.
