Nations Agree to Transition Away from Fossil Fuels at COP28 Climate Talks

Nearly 200 countries at COP28 have agreed to move away from fossil fuels, marking the first time such a pledge has been made in decades of UN climate talks, Associated Press reports.

The agreement is seen as stronger than the earlier draft but falls short of calling for an outright phase-out of oil, gas, and coal. The deal emphasizes transitioning away from fossil fuels in a “just, orderly and equitable manner,” and aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and peaking carbon pollution by 2025.

While some consider it a historic step, critics point out significant loopholes that allow fossil fuel-producing countries to continue expanding.
