COP28 Considers to Phase Out Fossil Fuels, OPEC Opposes

At the United Nations climate conference (COP28), negotiators are working on securing strong agreements, especially on the issue of phasing out fossil fuels to combat climate change, Associated Press reports.

New proposed language released on Friday strengthened options for a rapid phase-out, but reports suggest OPEC’s top official urged member countries to reject any text targeting fossil fuels.

Two opposing groups, developing nations needing fossil fuels for economic growth and fossil fuel producers, including the US and Saudi Arabia, pose challenges to a quick phase-out.

Some progress is noted, with EU countries, some Latin American nations, and small island countries supporting a fossil fuel phase-out.
