Finland’s government has decided to reopen two out of eight border crossing points with Russia following a sudden increase in migrants, Associated Press reports.
The entire 1,340-kilometer border was temporarily closed two weeks ago over concerns that Moscow was using migrants as part of alleged “hybrid warfare” to destabilize Finland.
The government’s decision to reopen two southeastern crossing points, Imatra and Niirala, comes with the condition that the move will be reassessed by at least January 14.
he Finnish authorities say that nearly 1,000 migrants, primarily from Syria, Somalia, and Yemen, arrived at the border between August and November, with over 900 in November alone.
