Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his candidacy for the 2024 Russian presidential election, seeking another six-year term, Associated Press reports.
Despite facing criticism for Russia’s costly war in Ukraine, Putin still enjoys widespread support, with about 80% approval, according to the independent pollster Levada Center.
Putin, 71, who is widely expected to secure another term and extend his rule that began in 2000, is the longest-serving Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin. He has twice amended the constitution to potentially extend his stay in power.
