Armenia and Azerbaijan Announce Deal to Exchange POWs

Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to exchange prisoners of war and work towards signing a peace treaty, marking a significant step towards peace in the region, Associated Press reports.

Azerbaijan is set to release 32 captured Armenian military servicemen, while Armenia will release two Azerbaijani soldiers in return.

The joint statement from both countries indicates a shared view on achieving long-awaited peace, normalizing relations, and reaching a peace treaty based on principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This development comes after Azerbaijan launched a military campaign in the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh in September, resulting in the vast majority of the population fleeing the area and ending three decades of Armenian rule.

The peace agreement includes Armenia lifting objections to Azerbaijan hosting the 2024 international conference on climate change.
