UK Unveils Tougher Visa Rules to Reduce Migration

The UK government has introduced measures to achieve the largest-ever cut in net migration, which has reached record high levels, BBC reports.

Home Secretary James Cleverly announced a five-point plan to reduce immigration, including raising the minimum salary for skilled overseas workers from £26,200 to £38,700 and the minimum income for family visas to £38,700.

The plan also bans health and care workers from bringing family dependants to the UK, ends the ability of companies to pay workers below the going rate for certain jobs, increases the annual charge foreign workers pay for NHS use, and calls for a review of the graduate visa route.

Cleverly claimed that around 300,000 people who were eligible to come to the UK last year would not be able to under the new rules. The migration plan comes after official figures last month showed net migration at a record 745,000 in 2022.

Critics argue the measures could harm the NHS and social care sectors already facing staffing shortages.
