Google has reached a deal with the Canadian government to contribute $100 million Canadian dollars annually to the country’s news industry, AP News reports.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Google has agreed to properly support journalists, including local journalism. The move comes after Canada passed the Online News Act in June that requires tech giants to pay publishers for linking to or repurposing their content online.
The agreement averts the threat by Google to block the ability to search for Canadian news on Google in Canada. Meanwhile, Facebook and Meta have been blocking Canadian news since earlier this year.
