Russian President Vladimir Putin made conciliatory remarks about the conflict in Ukraine during a virtual meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20), expressing the need to consider ways to stop the “tragedy” of the war in Ukraine, Reuters reports.
The G20 meeting, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marked the first time Putin addressed G20 leaders since the beginning of the Ukraine war in February 2022, which triggered Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two.
Putin acknowledged the tragedy of war and emphasized that Russia has never refused peace talks with Ukraine. He used the term “war” to describe the conflict instead of the Kremlin’s term of a “special military operation.”
He highlighted the shocking impact of the conflict on civilians and drew comparisons with other international situations, including the situation in Gaza.
