Google has been fined 15 million roubles ($164,000) by a Moscow court for repeatedly refusing to store Russian users’ data on servers located inside Russia, Reuters reports.
This is part of the ongoing tensions between Russia and foreign tech companies regarding content, censorship, and data storage. Google’s Russian unit filed for bankruptcy in 2022 after authorities seized its bank account.
Google has faced pressure for not removing content considered illegal by Moscow and limiting access to certain Russian media on YouTube. Despite the disputes, Russia has not blocked access to Google’s services.
