Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa has resigned amid a widespread corruption probe involving his government, AP News reports.
Costa asserted his innocence but announced his resignation in a nationally televised address after police arrested his chief of staff and raided public buildings and properties in connection with the investigation.
The state prosecutor’s office stated that the Supreme Court was examining the involvement of suspects in the use of the prime minister’s name in allegedly illicit activities.
The investigation revolves around illicit activities related to lithium mine concessions near the border with Spain, a green hydrogen plant, and a data center project.
